As someone who’s still learning about networks (I really don’t know much about them yet!), I’ve been trying to understand the essential security practices that every engineer should know. Here’s what I’ve learned so far about network security fundamentals.

What I’ve Discovered About Network Security

Network security can seem overwhelming when you’re just starting out. There are so many concepts, tools, and best practices to learn. But after reading various resources and trying to understand the basics, I’ve identified some key areas that seem to be the foundation of good network security.

1. Firewall Configuration

Firewalls are like the security guards of your network. From what I understand, they control what traffic can come in and go out of your network. The key is to follow the principle of “least privilege” - only allow what’s absolutely necessary.

  • Start with a “deny all” rule and add specific allow rules
  • Regularly review and update firewall rules
  • Document why each rule exists
  • Use both network and host-based firewalls

2. Access Control: Who Gets In?

This is about making sure only the right people can access the right things. It sounds simple, but implementing it properly seems quite complex:

  • Use strong, unique passwords (or better yet, multi-factor authentication)
  • Implement role-based access control (RBAC)
  • Regularly audit who has access to what
  • Remove access immediately when people leave the organization

3. Network Segmentation: Divide and Secure

From what I’ve learned, this is about dividing your network into smaller, isolated segments. If one part gets compromised, the damage is contained. Think of it like having separate rooms in a house with locked doors between them.

Some key benefits of network segmentation include:

  • Limiting the spread of malware or attacks
  • Reducing the scope of compliance requirements (like PCI DSS)
  • Improving network performance by reducing broadcast traffic
  • Enabling more granular security controls

4. Monitoring and Logging: Seeing the Invisible

You can’t protect what you can’t see. Network monitoring helps you understand what’s normal so you can spot when something’s wrong:

  • Monitor network traffic patterns
  • Log security events and review them regularly
  • Set up alerts for suspicious activities
  • Keep logs for forensic analysis

5. Keep Everything Updated: Patching the Leaks

This seems obvious but is apparently one of the most overlooked practices. Software vulnerabilities are discovered regularly, and patches are released to fix them. Staying current with updates is crucial.

A good update strategy includes:

  • Regular patching schedules for all systems
  • Testing updates in a non-production environment first
  • Having rollback plans in case updates cause problems
  • Keeping an inventory of all software and firmware versions

What I’m Still Learning

I’ll be honest - there’s so much more to network security that I don’t understand yet. Concepts like intrusion detection systems, VPNs, network authentication protocols, and advanced threat detection are still on my learning list.

But I believe that starting with these fundamentals and gradually building knowledge is the right approach. Network security isn’t something you learn overnight, and I’m okay with being a beginner who’s trying to understand one concept at a time.

My Next Steps: Hands-on Learning

I’m planning to set up a small home lab to practice these concepts. I want to try configuring a firewall, setting up network segments, and monitoring traffic. I’m sure I’ll make mistakes, but that’s how we learn, right?

Here’s what my lab setup will include:

  • An old PC repurposed as a pfSense firewall
  • A managed switch that supports VLANs for network segmentation
  • A couple of Raspberry Pis to simulate different network devices
  • Wireshark for traffic analysis and monitoring

If you’re also learning about network security, remember that it’s okay not to know everything. The important thing is to keep learning, stay curious, and practice whenever possible.
